Help to Make Nebraska LB 920 a Reality!

by Jasmine Harris, MPH, CHES, Director of Public Policy & Advocacy

Nebraska needs criminal justice reform now. Our prison system is in an overcrowding crisis and we have the opportunity to do something about it. We need your help to make LB920 a reality!

We’re asking you to contact your senator and tell them that the evidence-based strategies introduced to address resources for high-risk individuals, reduce barriers to successful reentry, expand community based services and ensure the sustainability of criminal justice reforms WILL work.

Some senators believe that the proposed policy recommendations are concepts from California and would not work here. On the contrary, many of the reforms found in LB920 were included in the First Step Act in 2018 passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Trump; which have wide support in many states comparable to Nebraska.

Senators need to hear from people who have been directly impacted by the justice system and others who have walked alongside them in their process to return back to our communities. They need to hear how these policies will positively impact the lives of all of our community members by increasing public safety and reducing recidivism.

LB920 is the right path forward. Please take a moment to call or write your senator to tell them you believe ALL Nebraskans can find freedom from cycles of incarceration by passing this legislation.

Contact your senators today to ask them to vote for LB920.
